Characteristics of Alginate Wound Dressings

Alginate salts are medical dressings with unique advantages, mainly manifested in the following aspects:

The high moisture-absorbing and easy-to-remove properties of alginate wound dressings

Alginate wound dressings can absorb a large amount of wound exudate, prolong the replacement time, reduce the number of replacements and nursing time, and reduce nursing costs. Alginate dressing uses: can effectively retain wound exudate, provide the moist environment needed for rapid wound healing, accelerate the migration of epidermal cells, promote the release of growth factors, stimulate cell proliferation, and enhance white blood cell function.

When the exudates come into contact with alginate after swelling, they form a soft hydrogel. High-M alginate can be removed by rinsing with warm saline solution, while high-G alginate swells less and can be easily removed as a whole, protecting the delicate new tissue of the wound and avoiding secondary trauma to the wound during dressing changes.

Alginate wound dressings are biodegradable and have gel-blocking properties

Alginate is a natural polysaccharide extracted from seaweed plants, with good biocompatibility, degradability, and environmental friendliness. Biocompatibility also makes it have natural cosmetic and skincare effects on the skin. After the alginate wound dressing comes into contact with the exudate, it swells significantly, and a large amount of exudate is retained in the fiber structure of the gel. The swelling of a single fiber reduces the pore structure between the fibers, and the diffusion of fluid is stopped. Therefore, the alginate wound dressing, one of types of medical dressings, has the property of "gel blocking", which greatly reduces the diffusion of wound exudate and the immersion in healthy tissue, effectively isolates the invasion of external bacteria, and prevents wound infection.

The high permeability and metal ion adsorption properties of alginate wound dressings

The alginate fibers of the alginate wound dressing form a hydrophilic gel after absorbing moisture, and the "free water" combined with the hydrophilic group becomes a channel for oxygen transmission. Oxygen enters the wound tissue from the external environment through the processes of adsorption, diffusion, and desorption. In addition, the high-G segment inside the fiber, as the molecular skeleton connecting point of the fiber, becomes the relatively rigid part of the water gel and the micropore through which oxygen passes, avoiding an anaerobic environment in the wound and improving the quality of the wound healing environment.

Alginate sodium in the alginate wound dressing exists in water solution with -COO-, -OH groups that can form coordination compounds with multivalent metal ions. Therefore, a large number of metal cations in the fabric made from it have health benefits such as sterilization, deodorization, and permanent antibacterial and antipruritic effects. It is not irritating to the skin, can promote the microcirculation of the human epidermis, and also has functions such as antistatic, partial X-ray and UV protection.
